Forbidden City

Day 15: July 4

Author: Everyone
Location:
Beijing

Today, around noon, we went to see the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. It was great to see the actual Forbidden City that was depicted in the movie "The Last Emperor." After visiting the Forbidden City, we went right outside to Tiananmen Square where Cason decided to have some fun with security guards. Translated into English, he said, "What time does that thing rise?" The security guard chuckled and told him 4:45.

Brit's Birthday!

Day 16: July 5

Author: Cason
Location:
Beijing

Today was the first of two exciting days - BIRTHDAYS!! Today was Brit's birthday, and it was a BLAST! We spent the whole day wokring at China Care. A few of us spent time in the infant and toddler rooms, but most of us chose the hospice instead. Before going back to the hotel, we tried to pick up the laundry we had dropped off earlier in the day. Unfortunately, Emily had not correctly interpreted the launder's hand signals and the laundry was to be picked up in 3 days not 3 hours! After that we went back to the hotel and got ready or a nice night out at Pinnacle Plaza for Brit's birthday. We ate at the Italian restaurant. It was so much fun!!

Great Wall and Libby's Birthday!!

Day 17: July 6

Location:
Mutianyu, China

Today we walked up the stairs to get to the Great Wall of China. The stairs weren't that bad, but when I got up there, I was feeling sick. Same with Ally. Although, we didn't feel well, just being up there was amazing. We didn't stay up there for long and we felt much better when we got back down to the bottom. We rode down the long slide. It was so much fun going fast, except when there were slow people in front of us. We went back to the hotel to shower and rest until dinner. We went to the mexican place for dinner since it was Libby's birthday (we did Little Italy last night for Brit's birthday). Everyone enjoyed it. We went to China Care for the night shift and helped put babies to sleep. I must say, today was an eventful day. However, unfortunately, a baby from Shannon's hospice, China Little Flower, passed away today. He was very sick and had numerous seizures throughout the day, everyday. We all bought Shannon a card, flowers, and some goodies.

Water Fight and Shift Night

Day 18: July 7

Author: Averill
Location:
Beijing

Today we arrived at China Care, ready and prepared for a water fight. We helped fill the water guns in preparation for the fight. When we arrived at the Group Homes, the kids were awaiting us and ready to play. By the end all three buckets of water were gone and no one remained dry. We are now working at China Care and China Little Flower helping and caring for the kids, toddlers, and babies.

Massages!

Day 19: July 8

Author: Libby
Location:
Beijing

Today we volunteered in the morning. We also got our laundry and then had lunch at Yao Restaurant! After lunch we went to get massages at the Medical Massage Center - it was such a treat. We also saw one of Shanon's professors perform a christening for three of the hospise babies. We then had our last dinner at Yao Restaurant - except some people didn't eat in favor of another massage!! In the evening, we had a Lifeworks Forum and talked about the program over all.

Saying goodbye (round 1)

Day 20: July 9

Author: Cason
Location:
Beijing

On our last day together in China, we had a bit of a free-choice day to explore the city and spend time together. We all went to the Pearl Market. For lunch some went to KFC and some went to Chinese Hot Pot. After lunch, we went to China Care to say our goodbyes. For our last dinner together, we went to a nearby town to dine at Feking, a hot pot restaurant. Very interesting, everyone seemed to find something they liked. After dinner, the staff showed up with a slide show they'd put together from the trip - it was so awesome! We had our closing program and are trying to prepare to head home...
